Anjuman College LEADer Empowers Girls at Her College

Women pay an important role in society, but few realize their power.  To address this misconception, LEADer Pooja Rana of Anjuman Arts and Science College, Dharwad, invited LEAD Program Manager Geeta Hegde as a guest speaker to address 50 girl students on different topics regarding women empowerment.  The girls enjoyed the session and were given a different perspective about the power of women. 

Leadership Camp at Anjuman Arts and Science Degree College, Dharwad

On September 29th, a one-day Leadership Camp was held at Anjuman Arts and Science Degree College, Dharwad, for 29 LEADers.  The students started their day off with a creativity session in which they made duck figurines out of old newspapers.  The students then learned about innovation, its importance, and how they can incorporate innovative thinking into their futures.  The LEADers strengthened their communication skills as they participated in several basic communication activities and learned about job interview skills.  Students were also given the opportunity to practice their presentation skills through an activity in which the students were divided into groups and asked to create stories using photos found in newspapers, and present those stories to the other students.  The day ended with some fun jiving and dancing. 

Students gave positive feedback about the Leadership Camp.  After attending the camp, the students feel really motivated to give more effort, concentration, and creativity to their future projects. 

LEADer Sends Village Children Back to School

LEADer Bhojraj from Anjuman Degree College, Dharwad, identified an education problem in the village of Daddikamalapur.  He had noticed that the village had many children who were not regularly attending school.  To solve this problem, Bhojraj visited the local government school and requested a database, which included a list of the children who had dropped out of school.  Bhojraj and his team approached the parents of the seven children who had dropped out of school, and spoke to them about the value of education.  Because of Bhojraj's project, those children are now regularly attending school.  Bhojraj has continued to follow up with these children to make sure that they stay in school.  In addition, he has plans to conduct a cultural activity in order to create further interest in education within the children.

Deshpande Foundation Hosts IT Training Session for Dharwad LEADers

33 students participated from Anjuman Degree College, Dharwad, participated in an IT training session hosted by the Deshpande Foundation.  The session exposed students to important programs and functions.  Students learned basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and how to create professional documents.  Students also learned how to create email IDs, as well as the principles of effective and professional emailing.  Finally, students learned about important social networking sites such as Facebook, and their relevance in today's globalized world.  The world today is highly dependent on technology, and without a proper knowledge of how to use technology, one runs the risk of falling behind.  This IT session gave many students technical exposure that they had never before been given, and they were very appreciative for all that they learned.   

Dharwad LEADer Improves Indian Patriotism and Protects Environment on Independence Day

August 15th, India's Independence Day, exhibits nationwide patriotism and pride.  People wave flags freely to show their love and appreciation for our country.  However, these patriotic expressions can have harmful effects-especially when plastic flags are left and litter the ground.  Recognizing this, LEADer Minuddin from Anjuman Degree College, Dharwad wanted to do his part in making Independence Day more eco-friendly.  On August 13th and 14th, he visited 9 colleges and 13 schools in Dharwad to create awareness about the environmental dangers of using plastic flags.  He told people to opt for flags made from khadi material instead. He also distributed flyers to people near the KSRTC public bus stop, hospitals, and traffic signals, and told them to avoid using plastic flags on Independence Day.  Minuddin's initiative led to significant impact.  In past years following Independence Day, newspapers would post sad stories of hundreds of plastic flags thrown and forgotten about, and left on the ground-a disrespect for Indian patriotism as well as the environment.  This year, Dharwad newspapers published no such stories.  In fact, it was recorded that usage of plastic flags had been reduced by 80%.
