Project: Recycling of Waste Chalk

Atheeq noticed that a lot of chalk was being wasted at his college.  He came up with an idea to recycle and reuse the wasted chalk.  Atheeq devised a method to recycle use chalk, and he presented this method to the principal.  After this method was successfully implemented at his college, he introduced his idea and implemented his method in a local government school.  

Project : Replacement of Cement

“Once, talking to my father, he said that through industrial waste cement can be made. I’m learning civil engineering and even we learnt a bit about it. When I got to know about LEAD I thought of taking this as a project,” said Neelambika, a LEADer of KLEIT.

“Replacement of cement” : because of there is more usage of cement it produces more waste. Industries also produce more waste. Using all waste products green concrete is produced and it is also more durable than normal concrete.   

It helps in small amount in reduction of environment pollution and the cost of production.

Neelambika wanted to make some blocks and use them for sitting benches near the parking or canteen areas. In the process she learnt the effective usage of waste materials, and came to know the effort and pains of employees who build the buildings.  

Project: Plastic Mat

Usually a person throws waste plastic once they use it, yet plastic plays a major role in environmental pollution. LEADer Harish from BVBCET, Hubli, came with an idea to solve this problem by going village to village and teaching them how to prepare plastic mats in order to recycle plastic. He convinced 20 families to reuse instead of throwing the plastic out.  He implemented in his project in Annigeri village.

Project: A Day for Juvenile Home Kids

Winner of Best Individual Initiative and Action Award – Dharwad Region 2012

LEADers Megha Jain and Shruti Harihar from BVBCET, Hubli came up with the idea to do something meaningful for juvenile home kids situated close to their hostel in Unkal colony in Hubli. They started collecting used and unused papers from their friends and offices. Within two weeks they collected 120 kg of papers. All the waste papers were sold to a paper industry and in return they got 150 new notebooks and Rs. 850 in cash. They also collected Rs. 1000 cash from local people. Later instead of giving these books directly to kids they conducted an exposure visit to BVB Engineering College for 22 kids to make them understand practically about the college study atmosphere and working. It was the occasion of Childrens’ Day when they organized this project. Both organized some competitions for the kids and distributed prizes to the winning team of each game. These prizes were purchased from the cash they have collected from friends, people and after selling papers.

This effort was to make these underprivileged kids’ lives happy at least for a day. The remaining books were given to 80 more children living in slum areas of Hubli.

Project: Usage of Newspaper Bags

Location: Rural Engineering College, Hulkoti

Making the world plastic free is a big task, but Shruti feels that "if you want to bring a change then first I need to change then I can change anything."

Shruti and her team collected old and waste newspapers in order to re-use them in the forms of bags to carry light things. They took permission from the principal to implement it at the college campus also. These bags were given at Xerox & stationary shops to use rather than plastic bags.

Newspapers from scrap shops, pieces of rope, gum and all other required materials were collected. Using these materials many bags were prepared. The team gave all these bags to shops for usage, though they started to use them first.

Usage of plastic at campus and in surroundings will be controlled to some extent so people will be benefited.

Trying to reduce plastic bags in campus because plastic cannot be decomposed. The team is trying to maintain a pollution-free campus.

Project: Replacing Plastic with Paper Bags

The main aim of the project was to raise awareness about plastic. For that the team prepared paper bags and cloth bags. They approached some people explained why they shouldn’t use plastics and then sold the paper and cloth bags. This motivated people to use cloth or paper bags to contribute to make the world plastic-free . If every individual stops using plastics then the day is not so far that the world is free from plastic.
