Project: Creation of Youth Club

Nagaraj Naik

Nagaraj wanted to create more opportunity for rural youth.  He created a youth club  which allows youth to practice various extracurricular activities, thereby giving them enjoyment and also exposure to other practical skills.  Nagaraj's youth club benefitted 60 students.

Project: Krishihonda (Rainwater Harvest)

Rainwater harvesting is the conservation of rainwater to be reused for future needs.  Nagaraj and people in his village of Karoor constructed a krishihonda to help harvest rainwater.  30 villagers benefitted from Nagaraj's project. 

Project: Akshar Gyana

Chidanand (A.S.S. College, Gadag)

Literacy remains one of the most serious issues facing the world today.   Chidanand recognized his own potential to solve the literacy problem on a local level, and implemented a project for the illiterate women in his village.  He taught them how to read and write useful words, and how to sign their own signatures.  Through his initiative, these women can better manage their daily lives and exercise more independence.

Project: Groundwater Recharge

Naveen (BVBCET)

Naveen became seriously concerned that the villagers in Hallikeri would face a water problem during the summer.  As an engineering student, he thought to use his technical knowledge to help society and conduct a borewell water recharge in the village.  His strong determination inspired him to raise Rs. 27,000 /- from his fellow students, the villagers, and SRDS to help fund this project.  Naveen's project helped provide water throughout 12 acres of land.

Project: Two-Day Camp for Rural Kids

Kavya (SKSVMACET)

Rural children often do not receive much exposure to societal issues and other forms of creative expression.  Kavya conducted a two-day camp for rural children in Bommanahalli.  During the camp, she exposed the children to a variety of activities to help them become more aware of the world around them and to help them achieve their own potential..  Among the many activities she led, Kavya taught the students about the importance of higher education, awareness about food wastage, awareness about pollution, an introduction about LEAD, tricky mind games, ad making, dance and skit performances. 

Project: LEAD Library

Santosh G Katral (KLECET)

The village of Honwad did not have a decent library.  Santosh wanted to create a library for the villagers, particularly the students, to enhance creativity, education, and provide them a place to study.

Construction of the library started with making a list of requirements and collecting the necessary materials.  Santosh and his team approached Shrikant Talakeri, Uttam Katral, Gopal Katral, Anil Natikar, and Prashant Uttare and collected over 400 study materials such as textbooks, exam books, notes, quote books, storybooks, and magazines.  Prashant Talakeri, the President of the library, provided space for the library without requiring any rent.  Santosh and his team then appointed people for the management positions of the LEAD Library.

The LEAD Library has been very helpful to villagers and students alike in Honwad.  Santosh says that the most important lesson he learned from this is that "when major problems arise, we should try to do something different than others."

Project: Drainage System

Deepa D S (Chanuka First Grade College, Davangere)

The village of Kodihalli did not have a proper drainage system, and the village was progressively becoming dirtier.  Deepa approached the Gram Panchayath and Zilla Panchayath to solve this problem.  Rs. 13 lakh was sanctioned from the government, and the drainage system was completed within 8 months.  Deepa felt very satisfied by her success.  Her project was showcased in Yuva Summit 2013 and won the "Best Project" award at LEAD Valedictory, Davangere.

Project: Volleyball Tournament for Rural Youth

Ganapati Hegde (MES College of Commerce, Sirsi)

Ganapati found that many young students in rural villages do not get the opportunity to practice or compete in sports activities.  For this reason, he thought to hold a volleyball coaching class for rural students.  He coached volleyball to 10 rural students.  The students enjoyed this unique opportunity, and continue to practice volleyball. 

Project: Well Cleaning

Shashank (R L Law College)

Shashank observed dirty water in a well near his home.   The well was full of plastic algae, and other waste products.  He decided to take on the challenge of cleaning this well so that it could be used domestically.  Shashank arranged a meeting with local leaders to agree upon  the requirements for the well cleaning, and the expected date of completion.  Shashank then made the necessary arrangements to hire a pump, a tractor, and laborers.  Many villagers came forward and volunteered to help with the cleaning efforts.  The well was cleaned and painted in only a single day.  The well now provides water for 10 households.  

Project: Keeping a Dustbin in My Village

Vijayalaxmi Kale (SKSVMACET)

Vijayalaxmi was concerned about the lack of cleanliness in her village.  To resolve this problem, she dedicated herself to placing a dustbin in her village, and encouraging the villagers to use it.  The dustbin is now used by many people in her village, and the area is noticeably cleaner . Through this project, Vijayalaxmi significantly improve the sanitation efforts of her village.  All of the villagers now benefit from a cleaner, safer living environment.  

Project: VastraSammana (Donating Clothes to the Poor)

Priyanka (SVCMACET)

Priyanka dedicated her project to helping those in need. She traveled throughout several different villages and distributed clothes to those who really needed them.  Around 20 people were given a set of clothes.  Priyanka learned a great deal from implementing her project, and she gained new perspective.  She says that her project gave her an experience of life which she had not yet seen.  

Project: First Aid for the Poor

Pankaj (SKSVMACET)

Pankaj noticed that village residents lacked basic and important training in First Aid.  To improve this, Pankaj distributed first aid kits to several families throughout the village.  He educated the families on the importance of First Aid and taught them basic First Aid skills. 20 village families have benefitted from Pankaj's project.  

Project: Village Talent Hunt

Bhavana (SKSVMACET)

Bhavana noticed that lots of students from villages possessed many great talents, but did not have the opportunity or platform to practice and showcase their various talents. For this reason, Bhavana organized an event for the students in the village, and carried out activities such as handwriting, essay writing, dancing, singing, drawing, and more. Prizes were distributed to the winning students of the activities and competitions. Bhavana also mentored the students and showed them that while studying and education is important, they should not forget about their talents and their hobbies.

Project: Margadarshi

Bhagyashree Kulkarni (A.S.S. College)

Bhagyashree counseled rural children and guided them on finding careers that they are passionate about.  In villages, very few students opt to continue their studies after SSLC.  Bhagyashree wanted to share her own personal insight and knowledge with students from villages to inspire them to set big goals for themselves, and to achieve those goals.  Bhagyashree was very surprised by the diversity in career choices that the students aimed to pursue; the students she counseled had dreams of becoming engineers, doctors, painters, dancers, owning their own businesses, joining the army or police, and various careers dealing with animation and mass communication.  By advising the students and igniting their passions, Bhagyashree has taken the first step to motivate these students to enter the career of their choice, and she hopes to continue guiding them in the future. 

Project: Health Check Up Camp

LEADer: Imran Basha

Location: Turcigattha village

College:  Davangere University Msw Dept

Imran Basha from the MSW Dept, Davangere University conducted a health check up camp at Turcigattha village. He observed that many of the villagers suffer from illnesses. So, he took initiative to solve their problem. He collaborated with a government hospital. In this camp more than 150 villagers participated  & got benefit.

Project: Plastic-Free Village

Shantaram Rao (MES College of Commerce)

In Shantaram’s village of Halageri, near Sirsi, the villagers were disposing of plastics wherever they wanted.  Shantaram wanted to change this and clean up his village.  He gathered the youth of the village and encouraged them to pick up garbage.  Additionally, he placed dustbins in the village to ensure the proper disposal of garbage in the future.  Now, the 300 residents of Halageri are enjoying a cleaner village. 

Project: Vegetable Gardens

Vinayak Bhat 

Vinayak observed that his village had very good conditions for growing vegetables.  To capitalize on this, Vinayak took initiative to introduce malty vegetable plants to his village.  He also trained some of the village housewives on growing vegetables.  Five families are now growing their own vegetables and now benefit from having an extra food source.  

Project: Construction of Road in Colony

 Muddusar (Govt First Grade College)

Muddusar worked to provide proper road facilities for the colony of Kasturaba Nagar.  To accomplish this, Muddusar approached the company head, and both of them went to the municipality corporation to ask for infrastructure facilities for their colony.  Initially, the municipality corporation was hesitant.  After perseverance and follow-ups by Muddusar, however, the municipality corporation sanctioned the construction of a 400 meter road. 

Project: Early Age Marriage

Usha (SJPN Trust, BCA College Nidshoshi)

Usha’s village had a problem of child marriage.  To solve the problem, Usha approached the people of the village and the Gram Panchayath, and educated them of the disadvantages of child marriage.   Afterwards, Usha gathered feedback from the people.  The feedback indicated that the people were very convinced by Usha’s point of view.  Usha’s hard work has therefore ensured that many children will be protected against early marriage. 

Project: The LEAD Library

Santosh Katral

Santosh opened a LEAD Library in his village.  He gathered over 1,500 books for the library.  Santosh’s LEAD Library can not only help students in the village enhance their education, but all members of the village can benefit from this library.  The library will serve as an educational and cultural landmark in the village that will provide learning resources and entertainment for all, for years to come.
