Laxmeshwar LEADer Reduces, Reuses, and Recycles to Create Environmental Awareness
LEADer Sneha from SKSVMACET not only wanted to create environmental awareness, she wanted to become part of the solution to environmental issues. To accomplish this, she designed and produced low cost, creative plastic bags made from old newspaper. Sneha's multifaceted approach successfully tackled different aspects of the environmental issue: Sneha was able to reduce waste by recycling newspaper to create the bags. Additionally, these paper bags discourage people from using plastic bags, thereby protecting the environment and creating environmental awareness. 
Laxmeshwar LEADer Solves Plastic Problem at Local Level
Medical shop owners generally distribute plastic carrying bags for customers to carry their purchased products. With the environmental dangers posed by accumulating plastic waste, though, LEADer Meghana from SKSVMACET knew that such a reliance on plastics would have dangerous consequences. After recognizing the problem, she implemented a solution at the local level. Meghana made 1000 small paper covers and distributed them to shop owners. Her initiative is preventing the use and distribution of plastic bags and creating environmental awareness throughout her community.
LEAD Celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas Across the Locations
Every year on July 26th, India remembers and appreciates the soldiers
who sacrificed their lives at Kargil Vijay Diwas to protect India from
Pakistani invasion. It was on this day in 1999 that the Indo-Pakistani
War ended, and India was able to regain its lost territory.
On July 26th, 2013, each LEAD region hosted special Kargil Vijay Diwas remembrance celebrations. Through these celebrations, LEAD and its students touched and inspired hundreds of people throughout Karnataka.
Davangere
40 Davangere LEAD students, as well as 300 students from New Delhi Public School, Edu Asia (Navodaya) participated in a memorial procession through Davangere. The procession helped spread awareness about Kargil Vijay Diwas throughout the city as it passed by the LEAD office, Shakar Leela Gas Agency, and Gundi Circle until finally reaching Govt Mothi Veerappy Junior College.
Davangere citizens, students, and ex-service men all attended a ceremony at Govt Mothi Veerappy Junior College to honor Indian patriotism. Sri S S Pattana Shetty D C DVG presided over the function.

Yallappa and Sri Ramegowda (Karnataka Rakshana Vedike), Sri
Chandrasekhar (Principal ,M V Govt Junior College), Smt Saroja B J P

Consultant), and Sri S S Shanmuka (Ex-serviceman) presided over the function. The function was anchored by Mrs. Deepashree Ram Mohan (LEAD Davangere Program Manager). The welcome speech and vote of thanks were presented by Kum Nidhi and Kum Megha, respectively.

A candle lighting ceremony, inaugurated by Sri S S Pattana Shetty, took place in Gundi Circle following the function. Lit candles and patriotic songs lit up the darkness and set a peaceful tone. The function ended with a singing of the national anthem.
Belgaum
Under the initiative of LEADers Akshay and Nitin from GIT College, Belgaum students conducted a rally throughout Belgaum to commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas.
12 LEAD students and 60 school students participated in the rally. The group attracted public attention by shouting patriotic chants as they walked through the streets. Through their high enthusiasm energy, these Belgaum students created a deep awareness and appreciation for the lost soldiers.
Following the rally, the students held a candle lighting ceremony and sang the national anthem.
Dharwad
LEADers Arjun, Naveen, Asha, Shivshankar, and Akshay organized a procession to help students understand and appreciate the sacrifices that the soldiers made for India.
163 students participated in the procession. The procession started at R.N. Shetty Kridagana and ended at Kargik Stupa. After the procession, the students sung the national anthem and offered flowers to the Stupa. The LEADers then explained the meaning of the national anthem and the significance of remembering Kargil Vijay Diwas to the participating students. Ms. Geeta Hegde (LEAD Hubli-Dharwad/Sirsi Program Manager) oversaw the event.
Gulbarga
LEAD Gulbarga organized Jago Hindustani. LEAD Students of Bhagyalaxmi PG Venkatesh Nagar, Gulbarba participated in a candle lighting ceremony, and observed two minutes of silence to mourn the lost soldiers.
The students, however, did not let sadness dominate the night. Instead, they made a promise to work towards a better India in honor of the fallen soldiers. Each student identified two problems in his/her community, and vowed to take initiative to solve these problems by Independence Day on August 15th.
Laxmeshwar
Students from a government school near Laxmeshwar knew nothing about the events that led up to, or the importance of Kargil Vijay Diwas. LEADers at SKSVMACET, Laxmeshwar, felt that all Indians, students included, should be knowledgeable and aware about Vijay Diwas. They went to the school and taught the students about the Indo-Pakistani war, and they made the students realize that the safety and security we have today is owed to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives at Kargil Vijay Diwas.
The LEADers made the session with the students interactive to ensure that the students learned as much as possible. Through various activities, the students were able to fully grasp the important role that soldiers play in our lives.
The LEADers also engaged the students in chanting slogans, observing a moment of silence, and singing the national anthem to build patriotism and appreciation.
SirsiLEADers Ganapati, Shriraj, and Shivaprasad form MES College of Commerce, Sirsi, organized a major event at their college in memory of Kargil Vijay Diwas. The ceremony consisted of singing the national anthem, a candle lighting ceremony, and a moment of silence to remember the fallen soldiers of the Indian Army. Over 500 students, as well as the Principal and other faculty members, attended and participated in the event. Mr. S M Hegde (LEAD Faculty Coordinator) presided over event.
Prior to the event, the LEADers visited the local police station to pay a special tribute for the members of police who also gave their lives at Kargil Vijay Diwas.
Hubli
At the LEAD Headquarters in Hubli, the soldiers who fought at Kargil Vijay Diwas were honored in an artistic and creative way. The LEAD Team created a writable banner, on which Deshpande Foundation employees were able to sign their names and write motivational messages of patriotism. People also dipped their hands in paint and decorated the banner with hand prints. This collective production of creativity will allow the memories of the soldiers to live on in a timeless manner.

Project: Akshar Gyana
Chidanand (A.S.S. College, Gadag)Literacy remains one of the most serious issues facing the world today. Chidanand recognized his own potential to solve the literacy problem on a local level, and implemented a project for the illiterate women in his village. He taught them how to read and write useful words, and how to sign their own signatures. Through his initiative, these women can better manage their daily lives and exercise more independence.

Primary education is the most important educational foundation. However, many government schools lack the necessary resources and materials to provide quality primary education to children. Recognizing this, Chidanand wanted to help a local government school nursery. He organized a team of fellow students and together they visited the school and noted down a list of necessary items that the school needed. Chidanand and his team were able to provide chairs, books, and slates for 30 children. By improving their learning environment, these children will now be receiving a better education, thereby increasing their chances for a brighter future.

Rural children often do not receive much exposure to societal issues and other forms of creative expression. Vijayalaxmi conducted a a camp for rural children in Ranebennur. During the camp, she exposed the children to a variety of activities to help them become more aware of the world around them and to help them achieve their own potential. Among the many activities she led, Vijayalaxmi taught the students about the importance of higher education, awareness about food wastage, awareness about pollution, how to improve creativity, and teamwork and time management.

Somashekar Nekar (SKSVMACET)
Somashekar conducted a voting awareness rally in Laxmeshwar to create public awareness about the importance of voting. Over 300 students, along with several college faculty members, participated in the rally. The rally drew attention to voting by generating excitement within the public and the participants alike and received positive response.

While these tasks may appear to be simple and basic, they form a crucial part of managing daily life. Knowing this, Somshekar felt that it was important to help these women. He held evening classes for 20 women every day. Now, these 20 women know how to read, write, and sign their own names. Additionally, these women now know how open savings bank accounts. Because of Somshekar's initiative towards empowerment, these women will now lead brighter futures.

LEAD Valedictory Hubli-Dharwad, Sirsi, Gadag, Laxmeshwar, and Hulkoti
The 2013 LEAD Valedictory function was held on May 6th, 2013, at the Deshpande Foundation in Hubli to commemorate LEADers throughout the Hubli-Dharwad, Sirsi, Gadag, Laxmeshwar, and Hulkoti regions on their year-long efforts. This celebratory event attracted and unified over 250 students and their parents, as well as 12 faculty members, from throughout 15 different colleges.
LEAD (LEaders Accelerating Development Program) aims to develop leadership, problem solving, and entrepreneurial skills through an innovative approach within college students. Through funding, support, and guidance from the LEAD team at the Deshpande Foundation, LEADers implement projects to create solutions for unresolved problems in their communities.
Honorable guests of LEAD Valedictory included Mr. Naveen Jha (CEO, Deshpande Foundation), Dr. Mohan Kumar (Principal, SDMCET, Dharwad), Dr. Basavaraj Anami (Principal, KLEIT, Hubli), Dr. Gorbal (Vice-Principal, SKSVMACET, Laxmeshwar), Mr. R. G. Hegde (Principal, MES College of Commerce, Sirsi), and Mr. Gautam Ostwal (CEO, Elegant Drugs, Hubli).
Several faculty members discussed how LEAD has helped diversify and enhance the college experiences of the students. A few LEADers were then given the opportunity to speak about how LEAD encouraged their personal growth and development.

Hygiene plays a major role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. However, many of the cooks and servers at a college mess hall were not knowledgeable about proper hygienic practices. Pavan approached the cooks and servers of the mess hall and taught them about how to maintain good hygiene in the kitchen and in the mess hall. Additionally, he provided the cooks and servers with head caps, aprons, and gloves. The college mess hall is now noticeably cleaner.

Project: Arogyam
Chidanand N (A.S.S. College of Business Administration)
Chidanand noticed that many people were unaware of their current health status. To remedy this, he organized a health camp, in honor of World Health Day, to give people the opportunity to receive an accurate health check up. Two doctors from Lakshmeshwar assisted in the health camp. More than 80 people attended the health camp and benefitted from the check ups. Several important dignitaries from Lakshmeshwar also attended.
Implementing this project helped Chidanand learn about event planning and organization. Additionally, his communication and public speaking skills improved.
Project: Keeping a Dustbin in My Village
Vijayalaxmi Kale (SKSVMACET)
Vijayalaxmi was concerned about the lack of cleanliness in her village. To resolve this problem, she dedicated herself to placing a dustbin in her village, and encouraging the villagers to use it. The dustbin is now used by many people in her village, and the area is noticeably cleaner . Through this project, Vijayalaxmi significantly improve the sanitation efforts of her village. All of the villagers now benefit from a cleaner, safer living environment.
Project: Competitions for Students in Remote Areas
Shruti Kammar (SKSVMACET)
Students in remote areas usually do not enjoy the same benefits as other children. For this reason, Shruti organized a series of art competitions for these students. All of the students were eager to participate in the different competitive activities, and the school's staff and headmaster were very supportive prior to, and during, the event.
Project: Creating an Awareness of Education Among Child Laborers
Shivakala VS (SKSVMACET)
Shivakala addressed the issue of child labor, which was very widespread throughout her hometown. She gathered several child laborers from her hometown and educated them on the importance of reading, writing, and education. Shivakala motivated them to go to school and to attend classes regularly. Additionally, she donated some books to them to spark their interest in literacy.
Shivakala mentioned that the most important things she learned from her project were effective communication and confident speaking.
