LEADer Asuba Priya's initiative of leadership camp

Asuba Priya is an active girl who has been inspired by ideologies of LEAD and has been taking challenges one after another to develop her leadership skills. Her recent LEAD project demonstrates her commitment towards building a country of Leaders. LEADer Asuba Priya who believes leadership qualities are essential for successful life and can be developed very early in life did a LEAD project of conducting a leadership camp for students of standard 11.

LEADer Asuba Priya conducted two day camp at Nikita Matriculation School, Coimbatore on 5 and 6 of March. For this camp, she acquired LCD Projectors and took a session for students at classroom provided by the school.  22 students attended this camp. She involved students in creative activities, skits, debates and games which enabled them to know more about themselves.  The activities energized students and highly motivated them. They requested Asuba Priya to conduct sessions every month.

Teaching and interacting with students younger than her, was a new experience to LEADer Asuba Priya. LEADer Asuba Priya says “Handling students needs lot of patience. Dealing with students in classroom activities was a new challenge to me and I am glad that I did this project.”

SIET Coimbatore Initiative of Cleanliness

“Cleanliness is next to godliness” is a quote. Keeping your surroundings and house clean is equal to a prayer, because a clean environment gives a person peace of mind and enthusiasm to do work. Cleanliness is even encouraged by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi through his Swach Bharat Abhiyaan. 

Today with growing population, waste management is a challenge. The best solution to it is dealing with the waste at grass root level itself.  LEADer Asuba Priya noticed this problem and thought of giving a meaningful solution.  It is then that LEADer Asuba Priya came up with a model for the waste segregation. She selected a nearby Village called Chinniyampalayam near Coimbatore and created a model village which stands as an example for other villages.

 She requested each and every villager to segregate the waste into bio degradable and non biodegradable at their home itself.  She educated villagers about importance of cleanliness and its impact on the environment.  She even provided people with waste bins required for the segregation.

This project was even supported by SIET College Coimbatore. They mentored her and helped her to raise fund of Rs 70,000. The Panchayat and members also helped the team in this project. There were 4000 direct beneficiaries and 1000 indirect beneficiaries from the project. The project duration was of  total 6 months. Initial 3 months was spent for distribution of bins and next 3 months were spent on monitoring. Now the distribution phase is completed and the monitoring phase is in process.

The project was appreciated by the college, friends and the village Panchayat for taking such a broad initiative for the improving the locality which the team belonged to. 

Coimbatore LEADer Helps Save 500 L. of Water Daily

On her way to college every day, LEADer V S Ramya from ECE, Coimbatore, used to see lots of water getting wasted because of a broken tap.  This problem had persisted for one year without a solution. She approached the Chinniyampalayam Panchayat and demanded a solution.  After several approaches, they eventually decided to support her efforts.  They soon discovered that there were several broken taps like Ramya had seen that were leading to lots of water wastage.  With support of the Panchayat, Ramya purchased new taps to install and replace the broken ones.  Ramya also educated the local people about the dangers of water wastage.  Because of Ramya's project, more than 200 people are benefiting from the 500 liters of water that are being saved daily.

LEAD Coimbatore Students Place 1500 Stickers on Vehicle Headlights

Driving at night can be dangerous, but chances of accidents increase due to high beam lights.  When drivers turn on their high beam headlights, drivers coming in the opposite direction often get blinded and are therefore unable to see the road in front of them.  One way to prevent this from happening is to place black stickers on the high beam headlights.   On December 25th, 18 students from Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore, set to the streets of the city and stuck 1500 stickers on vehicle headlights.   The team received positive response from the people they approached, and the students are feeling happy that they've done their part to help prevent vehicle accidents. 

Introducing LEAD Coimbatore

We are pleased to announce LEAD's expansion to Coimbatore!  Coimbatore's first LEAD Cell has been launched at SSIET.  Founded in 2006, the college's vision is to transform people's lives by developing technologically superior and ethically strong engineers.  SSIET boasts 7 UG courses leading to B.E. and B. Tech degrees and 5 PG courses leading to M.E. and M.C.A. degrees. 

In September, two orientations were conducted at SSIET, Coimbatore, attracting over 300 students and more than 100 new LEAD registrations.  SSIET will be the official hosting college for Coimbatore.

 

Despite the fact that LEAD Coimbatore is relatively new, many students have already started taking initiatives.  One group of students has collaborated to hang signs in the college canteen to prevent other students from littering in the canteen. Another group of students is working on developing a device that collects dust from grass cutting machines. Finally, one group of students had the creative idea to collect waste plastic bottles from hotels and convert them into pots so that they can plant trees in local villages. 

It's safe to say that LEAD's newest location has exhibited a lot of potential.  We can't wait to see strong LEADers emerge from this region!
