Vijayapur LEAD Valedictory 2016

On 19th March, LEAD Vijayapur celebrated its Valedictory in collaboration with BLDEA’s Shri B.M Patil Institute of Nursing Sciences, Vijayapur.

The event was attended by more than 450 LEADers, students, 50+ faculties and media who witnessed this celebratory and informative event. The students from different locations of Vijayapur including Bagalkot, Talikote and Jamakhandi were been part of the event.

The guests of honour Dr. B.G. Mulimani (Vice Chancellor, BLDE University, Vijayapur), Mr. Naveen Jha (CEO, Deshpande Foundation, Hubli), Mr. Rajesh Darbar (President, Darbar Institutes, Vijayapur), Mr. Girish G. Badragond (grassroot innovator from Vijayapur), Mr. Shalmon Chopade (Principal, BLDEA's B.M. Patil Institute of Nursing Sciences, Vijayapur) and a special guest Mrs. Goura Bai presided over the evening's events.

Many LEAD students were awarded with Best LEADer and Best Project awards. Accolades were also presented for Best Supporting Faculty and Best Supporting College.

Kumar, Rukmini, Suprit, Noor and Santosh were awarded for their initiatives taken in different fields. Individual project awards went to Ramesh for Child Bank, Supriya for Kitchen Gardening, Suprit for Digital Literacy for Rural Mass, Bismilla for Tailoring Class for Women, and several other LEADers for their different projects that have made an impact.

Dr. Kubakaddi was awarded Best Supporting Faculty, Darbar College won Best Supporting College, S.C. Nandimath Law College Bagalkot won Best Performing College, and ASP & BLDEA Polytechnic College as Best Team Award.

Overall, the night was a joyous celebration of the accomplishments of the LEADers in Vijayapur, full of stories and positivity.

LEADer Hajinadaf's Neela Jaal initiative

 Water is the most important resource that God has given us and is extremely essential for us to survive.  A human being needs to drink around 2 liters of water every day to stay healthy.  While drinking water, it is essential to make sure that one drinks portable water, otherwise it can cause food poisoning and other health issues.

In the village Haranal, there was no portable water available and people used to drink the water supplied by the government which was unfit to drink. Hence LEADer Hajinadaf took an initiative to instill a water filter in his villages with the support of Gram Panchayat. The Gram Panchayat cooperated and instilled water filter of Rs.6,00,000.

The drinking water project "Neela Jaal"  of LEADer Hajinadaf benefited  more than 1000 residents of the village and Hajinadaf received appreciation from villagers

This initiative of LEADer Hjinadaf won him the “Best LEADer Award” at LEAD Valedictory 2015 at Vijayapur.

Child Bank Initiative by LEADer Ramesh

“I first made my investment at the age of 11. I was wasting time until then.”  --Warren Buffet
 

The above quote of Warren buffet, one of the world’s richest men stresses upon the importance of starting the savings early in life as money is very important to live a happy and a worry free life.

LEADer Ramesh Vaddodagi, a student of BSW of Jai Gurudev College used to tutor and tell stories to school children at the Dyamavva Devi temple in the village Managuli, in Vijayapura district. During these sessions he noticed that children were too poor to afford notebooks and pens required for their schooling. This created a need in front of him to empower kids in financial matters. Thus the idea of piggy bank for children was born and he took up a LEAD project on the same. For this he sought the help of a 27 member local youth group - Yuvashakti  Sanghatane - of which he was also a part.

The Children Piggy bank allows children to start depositing from Re 1.  The notepads are provided with the account holders photo. The notepad acts as their passbook and four phone numbers are written at the last page of the note pad. These phone numbers can be used by the children to call Ramesh and get the saved money when required. Children can draw not only saved money but also four to five times of their balance.

This initiative of LEADer Ramesh Vaddodagi has got off on a roaring success. Not only children even women have started of planning to invest in his bank. 

This LEAD project also got him “The Best LEADer Award” in LEAD Valedictory 2015 at Vijayapur.

Initiative of LEADer Pallavi on Jan Dhan Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, a programme launched by Prime Misnister Narendra Modi in August 2014 is aimed at improving the lives of millions of India’s poor, both in rural and urban, by bringing them into the financial mainstream.

Jan Dhan Yojana, if implemented properly has huge benefits as it ensures transparency and weeds out corruption. It will also wash away the influence of money lenders and Ponzi schemes.

LEADer Pallavi of S K Degree College Talikoti was aware of the benefits of Jan Dhan Yojana. She wanted people of her town to make best use of it and build a country of strong economy. Hence she thought of supporting government’s initiative to the best of her capacity.
 

Her desire was converted into reality through her LEAD project. Her plan was to visit houses in her village and neighboring and then, enlighten the people about the benefits of Jan Dhan Yojana. She also planned to get the bank accounts opened by taking their details and Adhaar Card.

This was a humongous task which cannot be accomplished without a team. Thus she took the support of LEAD cell at S K Degree College Talikoti, NSS and NCC.

She and her team worked continuously for a week on it and succeeded in opening 7560 bank accounts. Her project has made great impact on the people of Talikot. LEADer Pallavi also received appreciation from Karnataka Bank Manager for selfless commitment to the society.

Children's Day Celebrations

November 14th marked World Children's Day here in India, and LEaders from all over celebrated and gave back to the children in their communities in unique and loving ways.

Varanasi

On the occasion of children’s day, newly joined LEADers Kirti, Pritha, Deepak, Manish and Dheeraj (Faculty of Management & Sciences, Kashi Hindu University) touched 600+ students by organizing awareness sessions in schools of Varanasi, namely Glorious Academy and Sunbeam, Bhagwanpur. The LEADers addressed the students in the school assembly, and personally met with them to encourage them to bring a change in society. The emphasis of the encouragement was on cleanliness and hygiene for children of the today and the future, and to start this at a personal level. The schools’ administration were very supportive of the event, and the students showed a great response. As Leader Kirti, Pritha and team noes, "It was a memorable experience to share. We hope to see a brighter India in the future."

Bijapur

LEaders Altamash Qureshi, Khyum Hayatkhan and their team members of Kudachi celebrated Children's day with a twist. They planted 300 Saplings and they distributed pens and books to children. Teachers and staff members very much appreciated their initiative.

Chitradurga

On the occasion of Children's Day, LEAD Chitradurga LEADers Mamatha Nerlige, Giri Mallikarjun

Sarangmatt, Sahan Abblour, Vinay Hegde, and Venkat Cherry organized a free dental checkup for Govt. school children, with the help of SJM Dental College. They offered a free dental checkup, distributed toothbrushes and tooth paste, and also educated the children about ways to keep their mouths healthy,

by presenting a video clip.

Gulbarga

On the occasion of Children's Day Mr. Vikas Neel took the initiative to conduct a dental camp at Channamalleshwar High School. Mr. Vikas Neel, who is an active Leader in Gubarga, helped 600+ students in this camp.

LEAD Celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas Across the Locations

Every year on July 26th, India remembers and appreciates the soldiers who sacrificed their lives at Kargil Vijay Diwas to protect India from Pakistani invasion.  It was on this day in 1999 that the Indo-Pakistani War ended, and India was able to regain its lost territory.

On July 26th, 2013, each LEAD region hosted special Kargil Vijay Diwas remembrance celebrations. Through these celebrations, LEAD and its students touched and inspired hundreds of people throughout Karnataka. 

Davangere
40 Davangere LEAD students, as well as 300 students from New Delhi Public School, Edu Asia (Navodaya) participated in a memorial procession through Davangere.  The procession helped spread awareness about Kargil Vijay Diwas throughout the city as it passed by the LEAD office, Shakar Leela Gas Agency, and Gundi Circle until finally reaching Govt Mothi Veerappy Junior College.  

Davangere citizens, students, and ex-service men all attended a ceremony at Govt Mothi Veerappy Junior College to honor Indian patriotism. Sri S S Pattana Shetty D C DVG presided over the function. And Sri D Prasad ,S P, DVG , Lt. Sandesh( EX Service man), Sri K C Yallappa and Sri Ramegowda (Karnataka Rakshana Vedike), Sri Chandrasekhar (Principal  ,M V Govt Junior College), Smt Saroja B J P (Senior Activist), Dr Vittal Sapare, Sri B S Nadiger (Leading Educational Consultant), and Sri S S Shanmuka (Ex-serviceman)  presided over  the function.  The function was anchored by Mrs. Deepashree Ram Mohan (LEAD Davangere Program Manager).  The welcome speech and vote of thanks were presented by Kum Nidhi and Kum Megha, respectively.

A candle lighting ceremony, inaugurated by Sri S S Pattana Shetty, took place in Gundi Circle following the function.  Lit candles and patriotic songs lit up the darkness and set a peaceful tone.  The function ended with a singing of the national anthem. 

Belgaum
Under the initiative of LEADers Akshay and Nitin from GIT College, Belgaum students conducted a rally throughout Belgaum to commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas.

   12 LEAD students and 60 school students participated in the rally. The group attracted public attention by shouting patriotic chants as they walked through the streets.  Through their high enthusiasm energy, these Belgaum students created a deep awareness and appreciation for the lost soldiers.  

Following the rally, the students held a candle lighting ceremony and sang the national anthem. 

Dharwad
LEADers Arjun, Naveen, Asha, Shivshankar, and Akshay organized a procession to help students understand and appreciate the sacrifices that the soldiers made for India.  

163 students participated in the procession. The procession started at R.N. Shetty Kridagana and ended at Kargik Stupa.  After the procession, the students sung the national anthem and offered flowers to the Stupa.  The LEADers then explained the meaning of the national anthem and the significance of remembering Kargil Vijay Diwas to the participating students. Ms. Geeta Hegde (LEAD Hubli-Dharwad/Sirsi Program Manager) oversaw the event. 

Gulbarga
LEAD Gulbarga organized Jago Hindustani.  LEAD Students of Bhagyalaxmi PG Venkatesh Nagar, Gulbarba participated in a candle lighting ceremony, and observed two minutes of silence to mourn the lost soldiers.  

 The students, however, did not let sadness dominate the night.  Instead, they made a promise to work towards a better India in honor of the fallen soldiers.  Each student identified two problems in his/her community, and vowed to take initiative to solve these problems by Independence Day on August 15th.

                                                                                      
Laxmeshwar

Students from a government school near Laxmeshwar knew nothing about the events that led up to, or the importance of Kargil Vijay Diwas.  LEADers at SKSVMACET, Laxmeshwar, felt that all Indians, students included, should be knowledgeable and aware about Vijay Diwas.  They went to the school and taught the students about the Indo-Pakistani war, and they made the students realize that the safety and security we have today is owed to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives at Kargil Vijay Diwas. 

The LEADers made the session with the students interactive to ensure that the students learned as much as possible.  Through various activities, the students were able to fully grasp the important role that soldiers play in our lives.  

The LEADers also engaged the students in chanting slogans, observing a moment of silence, and singing the national anthem to build patriotism and appreciation. 

Sirsi
LEADers Ganapati, Shriraj, and Shivaprasad form MES College of Commerce, Sirsi, organized a major event at their college in memory of Kargil Vijay Diwas.  The ceremony consisted of singing the national anthem, a candle lighting ceremony, and a moment of silence to remember the fallen soldiers of the Indian Army.  Over 500 students, as well as the Principal and other faculty members, attended and participated in the event. Mr. S M Hegde (LEAD Faculty Coordinator) presided over event.


Prior to the event, the LEADers visited the local police station to pay a special tribute for the members of police who also gave their lives at Kargil Vijay Diwas. 

Hubli
At the LEAD Headquarters in Hubli, the soldiers who fought at Kargil Vijay Diwas were honored in an artistic and creative way.  The LEAD Team created a writable banner, on which Deshpande Foundation employees were able to sign their names and write motivational messages of patriotism.  People also dipped their hands in paint and decorated the banner with hand prints.  This collective production of creativity will allow the memories of the soldiers to live on in a timeless manner. 

 Talikoti

Project: Parking and Plantation

SECAB Engg College, Bijapur

Place of implementation: SECAB Engg College Campus, Bijapur

Activity and Impact: Earlier there was no proper parking. Parking place was very bad. It was horrible to park anyone’s vehicles. We took permission from our principal. Then we started our work. We cleaned the all the parking place. Then we made markings from paint to park the vehicles neatly. Now it is very easy to park our vehicles and also looking very beautiful and systematic also.

Our project got appreciation by our college principal and all faculties.
Students of our college are very happy now after this work.

Project: CommerSense 2012

Fayyum (Ajuman Degree College, Bijapur)

Fayyum planned, coordinated, and executed an event called “CommerSense 2012” at Ajuman College, Bijapur.  He raised Rs 64000 to host the event.  “CommerSense 2012” provided students with the opportunity to improve their skills in PowerPoint business plan presentations.  Additionally, Fayyum trained the students in marketing.  Over 14 colleges participated in the event. 

Yuva Summit 2013

January 30^th, 2013 marked the Deshpande Foundation’s 3^rd annual Yuva Summit, where hundreds of students and educators gathered to commemorate the LEADers on their projects and their accomplishments.  The Yuva Summit is one of the opening events for the Deshpande Foundation’s annual Development Dialogue, an international conference that features some of India’s greatest pioneers in entrepreneurship and development

While 60 inspirational projects were showcased at the event, 5 LEADers were presented the “Best Leader” award for carrying out projects that exemplified innovation and led to significant impact.  The best LEADers were selected by Mr. Ratan Tata, Mr. Narayan Murthy, Mrs. Sudha Murthy, and Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar.  Mr. Tata presented each student with his or her award. 

Recipients of the "Best Leader" Award:

Gulshan Banu (Govt First Grade College, Sirsi)

Hutgar, a village near Sirsi, had a poor drainage system. Gulshan addressed the problem by contacting the government and demanded a solution.   Initially, the public was not supportive and even criticized her efforts.  Gulshan, however, did not give up.  Instead, she took initiative and approached every villager and Gram Panchayat member herself.   As a result of her perseverance, the local Panchayat finally agreed to fund the construction of a drainage facility for Hutgar.  Gulshan’s project, costing Rs. 1,40,000, was completed in just one month.  Over 300 villagers now make use of the drainage facility.  Gulshan’s accomplishments have also extended beyond her project and Hutgar, as her work has inspired two other students to join the LEAD program.

Prasad (Shri Kasgateshwar Degree College, Talikoti)

Prasad began his project with intention of teaching the women of Hunasagi, Bijapur , how to read and write.   After starting his project, Prasad soon realized that he could help these women even more beyond literacy.  Prasad conducted 20 training sessions and taught the women about how to access banking facilities and  apply for loans.  He additionally provided the women with self-employment training.  Prasad’s project made an immense impact; 34 women were able to get loans from banks to start their own sustainable businesses in areas such as animal husbandry, tailoring, and handicraft.  

Santosh Kaveri (Samiti BBA College, Belgaum)

In the village of Shedbalin, Belgaum, farmers used any extra money they had to pay laborers to help them peel and clean the carrots that they harvested.  After six months of designing, Santosh invented a machine to help with this process.  With the machine, carrot preparation only requires the help of one or two people and requires a limited use of electricity and no water.  Moreover, Santosh’s machine allows 100 kg of carrots to be harvested, cleaned, and peeled in only 15 minutes.  Eight farmers now use this machine and have spared the costs of employing six laborers.   

Anuradha Bandari (Govt First Grade College, Sirsi)

There was a water problem in Anuradha’s village of Bommanalli, near Sirsi.  Anuradha assembled her villagers and encouraged them to take initiative themselves.  She helped the villagers, as well as members of the Gram Panchayat, approach the government and demand water tanks.  Within a month, the government sanctioned Rs. 2 lakh for the construction of four water tanks.  The government even agreed to fund the construction of streetlights for the entire Birumbe village.  Through the completion of her project, Anuradha not only inspired her local community, but she also inspired her peers; four other students at her college were motivated by Anuradha’s hard work and started taking initiatives and solving problems in their own respective communities.

Shreedevi R. Paschapur (BLDE BBA College, Jamkhandi)

The village of Sidhapur, in Jamkhandi, possessed no proper bus facilities.  Because of this, school buses did not stop at the village, and students would be forced to walk 9 to 10 kms per day.  Many students were missing their first two classes, and some students were not attending their classes at all.  Shreedevi brought this issue to the attention of her college principal and the local authorities.  One month later, permission was granted to allocate a bus stop in Sidhapur.  250 students now regularly attend their classes.

Best Performing College: Gogte Institute of Technology, Belgaum: 

Special recognition should be given to GIT and its commitment to the LEAD program.  GIT has given full support for the LEAD program, both on an off campus, and has maintained high participation in all LEAD related activities. LEAD has been allotted a designated area on campus and has been placed on GIT’s “Prestigious Partners” list. A strong senior and junior faculty has been created specifically for the LEAD program.  GIT has spent 50000 Rs in cash to support the LEADers participating in LEAD Prayana has sponsored 10000 Rs worth in merchandise.   Most recently, GIT sent some of its architecture students to help decorate the Deshpande Foundation for the Yuva Summit, even though the architecture students are not part of the LEAD Program. 

Project: The Art of Map Reading for Primary School Children

Geetha V. Oli (KSW University, Bijapur)

Geetha taught map reading to 34 students that had dropped out of school in order to re-instill their interest in education.  Those 34 students returned to school.  Additionally, the 34 students took further initiative and divided themselves into groups to teach map reading to over 100 children in 5 government schools throughout Bijapur. 

Project: Colouring of My Dream

Nagesh Sasanur (Shri Kasgateshwar Degree College, Talikoti)

Nagest noticed that an English language barrier created additional challenges for students pursuing degrees in the arts, as students were experiencing great difficulty with communication.  Nagaseh converted this struggle into an opportunity and devised a skit competition.  He assembled and encouraged 80 students to perform skits in English onstage.  Through their performances, the students learned the importance of practice and effort. 

Project: The Construction of Sub-Canal at Mudalgi Village

Shrishail (BLDE BBA College, Jamkhandi)

After noticing a serious water problem in his village, Shrishail approached the government officials and convinced them to provide a sub-canal facility for his village. A short two weeks later, construction on the sub-canal facility began.  15 acres of land are now receiving proper irrigation because of Shrishail’s project.

Project: Building a Library

      There is no good library for the villagers of Honwad, which made the team think about creating a new library which is very helpful for many people. It is the basic need for all competitive exams and helpful to the rural area students and school kids. 

      The team members decided and committed to buildiing a student library and made a list of requirements, collecting the materials required  for the library. They collected a large amount of about 400+ study materials containing text books, competitive exam books, useful notes, magazines like Sparhaspoorti, Spardha Vijeta, Spardha Chaitra, and quotes and story printed. They prepared and readied the pages within 30 hours. 

      The Library is very helpful to the villagers and all the students of the Honwad locality. Still some more donors are ready to present the books to the library, and work is underway in this step. The total collection of books is 400+ and costs about about Rs.15000. 

Bijapur Leadership Camp, Nov 28-30, 2012

On Thursday the 28 November 2013, the three days Bijapur Leadership Camp started with a lot of buzz in Muttagi village, with 60 participants from various colleges across Bijapur, Bagalkot, Jamkhandi, and Talikoti. The participating colleges included the KSW university, Darbar BBA,BCA, Chetana BBA and BCA , Jaygurudev BSW and MSW from Bijapur, SRN Arts and MBS Commerce college from  Bagalkot, Sri kaskatheshwar Art and Commerce college from Talikoti, and  BLDE BBA college from  Jamkhandi.

Day 1

The day started with inauguration by the participant leaders themselves by singing a camp song specially designed for the leadership camp. The exciting day began with a session by Mr. Ravi Bisaguppi from Bangalore who engaged the student on the topic “living life as a leader” wherein he focused on goal setting, personality development and stage skills. The students actively engaged themselves in the session asking some thought provoking questions.

Post lunch the students actively engaged in chart presentation on learning they had in the earlier sessions. Then the students had their second  slot on “Basic Legal concept”  by Advocates Mr.Santosh Kadi  & Mr.S.V.Allagi  from Bijapur who threw some light on basic legal concepts, thoughts on consumer forum, family court, write petition , court hierarchy and basic articles from the  Indian constitution. The session was conducted by showcasing videos, PowerPoint presentations and the activities also helped the students to understand the topics easily. The students had a healthy interaction and a question answer round was also conducted wherein all their queries were answered by the guest speakers.

The third slot of day 1 was power packed with cultural performances where in the students performed dance, drama and monoacting.  It was amazing to see the creative juices of the participants flowing out. This was followed by blind adventure activity where in the participants were blind folded and were left out in the open  and were asked to go from point A to B  facing all the obstacles and troubles which came their way. The main purpose of this activity was to sensitize the participants about Blind people, and also to make them realize the importance of eye donation. After another 15 minutes break, it was now the time for the thrilling Treasure hunt where materials were kept at different places and clues were given to find them out in a given time. The objective here was to challenge the decision making and planning skills of the participants’. The day saw a close at 3.15 am.

Day 2

With just 2 hours of sleep the very eager participants woke up at 5.00am in the morning, the day marked a start with pranayama and meditation after which the participants were made to play many games to charge up their energy and the we headed to the sightseeing, we visited Vijay vital temple, Narshima temple & Saraswati puskarni which were the architectural marvels. This was followed by a session by Mr.Ajay Suman Shukla functional head at the LEAD Deshpande foundation Hubli. Mr. Ajay started off with the Brainstorming session which helped participants to come up amazing ideas and the same were presented at the creative presentations slot. He also held some sessions on “self evaluation” and” goal setting”. The session was very interesting and useful for the participants to understand their own self and help them set their goals accordingly.

Post lunch Mr. Hanmanth from Bagalkot conducted a sessions on “strength of leader”, “problem solving” and “ self identification in society” where the student understood how the leaders face problem every single day and they can overcome the problems and how to solve them, and also few points were shared on how can get identified in the society . More over theoretical concepts were kept minimum and importance was given to experiential based learning, where the students practically made to do things from which they had tremendous learning. After this the participants were given the task of designing a cultural drama with social messages, at the end of the given task they came up with  remarkable dramas with social messages like blind believes and was followed by   patriotic and folk dances.

The last slot for the day started with idea generation, astonishingly 50 ideas were generated in a span of 60 minutes and 26 project finalized to be executed. Then the leader who had completed their projects presented how they turned their ideas into reality which was followed by group discussion, and interaction among the participants. This marked an astounding end to the second day.

Day 3

The participants kick-start their day with the adventurous trekking for about 10 kms on a nearby hill, they explored the caves, lot of activities/icebreaker were conducted followed by group photo session n tea. This was the day where their creative skills would be tetested; yes the participants had the long awaited creativity and innovation session. We had Mr.Radhakrishna Nayak, senior program manager for LEAD Deshpande foundation. The session started with the exciting icebreakers in the 1^st ice breaker the participants understood on how important it is for one to concentrate and focus on the goal , it made them realize that’s it is challenging to focus with the challenges and obstacles but they also understood that it’s not impossible.  Then the participants were made to feel at ease in the jiving session filled with lot of energy, then  the participants moved to the creativy session where they made posters on leadership, social issues like dowry, smoking, global warming and so on . After which they had creative presentations of the posters they made to distinguished guests and to their co participants. 

The creativity session was followed by preparations for the leadership camp valedictory function. The participants were very enthusiastic as they were the people who had planned for the event and they quickly managed to arrange everything within time, they had tremendous flow of energy, and the faces were shining bright like the sun the leadership camp had already started showing results

For the valedictory Mr. Siddhu  Pujari, presided over the ceremony, we had  Mr. Dinkar joshi  as the chief guest .Mr. Hanmanth  and Mr. Radhakrishna  were the special guests , Mr. Prashant, Mr. Ullas  organizers of the leadership camp were also present during the ceremony.

Event was planned organized and executed by the leaders. No stone was left unturned. The function kicked off with the invocation song of goddess Sarashwati Ji, followed by the bulletin on the whole 3 days leadership camp. The leaders shared their perspectives on how the camp had changed their mindsets and way of thinking .This was followed by speeches from the chief guest Mr. Dinkar Joshi and Mr. Siddhu Pujari who motivated the participants with stories on Vivekananda and asked to be the torchbearers of change.  At the end the guests were felicitated and a video made on the 3day camp was showcased and vote of thanks was given by Mr. Prashant Deshpande, Program Manager for LEAD Bijapur.

This was not an end but just a beginning for a new start, the participants were transformed from caterpillars to butterflies and now they had wings to fly ,they all had that spark in their eye, a will to change, a wish to learn more and  a dream to change the world.
