During the last elections, only 50% of the population vote.  To change and improve these statistics, LEAD students of SDMCET organized a Voting Awareness Program in order to create awareness about voting and to increase voting participation.

The Voting Awareness Program was carried out by door-to-door visits, starting at 10AM, in the areas of Gandhinagar, Yalakkishettar.  The students, carrying signs saying "WE VOTE", broke out into six different groups led by Pavaman Gaddankeri, Sammer Chitnis, Rachana Horadi, Sangamesh reshmi, Suraj Lingdal, Praveen Gouda Patil, and Govind G.N.  The program ended at 5 PM after visiting a total of 560 houses.

All of the groups commented that, overall, interacting with the people was a "great experience", although they did encounter a few challenges.  Through their interactions, the students learned about some current issues that exist in the voting process.  For example, some people last year had Voter ID's, but their names were missing from the Voters List.  Other people had never had their Voter ID's issued to them.

The LEAD students hope that the Voting Awareness Program will increase the voting rate.
