2008 LEAD Awards and DCSE Inauguration

LEAD AWARDS
Sangeeta Mane solved the drainage system problem of Maradgi Village. She found that there were no toilets in the village and decided to construct them. She found a scheme in the local corporation office which could provide 50% reimbursement of the amount spent and the remaining half she could raise through local residents of the village. Another special achievement of this project is that the team has never quoted any labour charges for construction.


Nabeelah Bijapur wanted to make auto drivers aware of blood groups and provide them with identity cards so that the passengers feel safe to travel. She started her journey with 40 auto drivers. Seeing her passion and necessity she was invited by the Commissioner and administration to implement ID cards to 100 more auto drivers during the traffic awareness. She now has an open invitation to implement the project to all 12,000 auto drivers of Hubli-Dharwad.


Namrata Khargekar wanted to prevent wastage of unused clothes. She started collecting clothes from her friends and community. She  distributed the collected clothes to needy people.


Ajay Inamdar wanted to incorporate "ball-cocks" in the water tanks which prevent water overflow and thereby conserve water. His passion is to work with water which has national importance. Ball-cocks is an old mechanism but is very useful according to many of his beneficiaries.



Asma Shaikh had a passion to teach children who were not able to attend school. She transformed her own house into a community learning centre and teaches students innovatively. The fact that she is from an arts background and pursuing her MA externally did not create any hindrance in her project.


DCSE Inauguration
On the 6th of February, Deshpande Center for Social Entrepreneurship was officially inaugurated by the former President of India Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. On the same occasion 27 best projects were exhibited to the dignitaries ( smt. & shri. Narayan Murthy, Sudha Murthy, smt. & shri Gururaj and Jayshree Deshpande). Dr. Kalam, in his address to the students said that establishment of Deshpande Foundation was one of the great contributions made to North Karnataka region where recognition of LEADership skills and entrepreneurial capabilities in the urban and rural areas around Hubli was required.
