LEADership Programme 2011- A Step AHEAD

Posted on Monday, July 25, 2011 by LEAD

LEADers Accelerating Development (LEAD) hosted a 10-day programme, targeting students, to improve their leadership skills. The LEADership Programme 2011 offered nineteen students an opportunity to learn about leadership and creativity skills for their future professional life. The programme’s themes were modeled after employable skills that are in demand today, such as Information Technology, Leadership, Critical Thinking, Creativity and Entrepreneurship. These students, who came from different LEAD locations, gained practical exposure through field visits of social enterprises. Additionally, the students learned to take on responsibility and accountability along with managing group projects and acting as a LEADer.
Extensive resources were set up for this programme; many celebrated Indian leaders, such as Mr. Naveen Jha (CEO, Deshpande Foundation), Mr. Vivek Pawar (CEO, Sankalpa Semi Conductors), Mr. Hemal Desai (Chief Manager, Mayur resorts) and Dr. Anita Kembhavi (Physician in Ayurveda, Ayusha clinic) visited our students to talk about their own individual accounts on leadership and success. These discussions being led through interactive lectures, turned out to be very effective.

Moreover, the programme was partly supervised by foreign teachers of diverse backgrounds, allowing the students a prospect to experience cross-cultural differences and progressiveness.
In this year’s programme, emphasis was put on oral communication skills, fluency in English language and stage courage. All students underwent an intensive process to learn these skills. In addition to teaching professional skills such as business management and communication, the programme aimed to boost each student’s self-confidence through ‘play and learn’ method. This method of interactive games not only taught them to voice their opinions, but also helped them in enhancing their creativity.
Priya from KCD, Dharwad, enthusiastically recounted “really have missed the essence of (her) life if (she) hadn’t come here”; and Vikram added “Before coming here, I was only thinking about myself. Now I want to do so much for disabled people!” Deepika from KLECET, Chikodi said “It developed my creativity. I drew paintings, designed cards with passion.”
By the end of the programme, the students gained a large network of close friends, professional skills and improved self-confidence. The LEADership Programme 2011 has primed these nineteen students to become the future leaders of the country. “I learned many more things than expected! Now I am acting as a leader!” concludes Preeti, B.K. College, Chikodi.
All the LEADers who participated in the camp are expecting to learn more about leadership tools as well as creativity. They look forward to participate again in next vacation LEADership camp.
