Project: Traffic Trouble

Master Leader : Manoj Vunki
Team members : Bharath, Abhi, Prajwal
College: PDIT Engineering College, Hospet.
Date: December 2010
Place of implementation: Dr. Rajkumar Park and Municipal Corporation, Bellary.
Manoj Vunki is a boy with big ideas and now he knows how to execute them. He saw that parking spaces at government buildings in public places lacked thought, discipline, or design. Manoj and team decided to design efficient parking spaces.
He approached every government official in Bellary. He spoke to the Commissioner of Police, DC, SP, RTO office and even the City Court about his idea. Manoj secured permission from 7 places. The 7 offices included the RTO, court premises, Central Jail, Municipal Corporation and Dr. Raj Kumar Park.  After approaching about 25 sponsors who promised to help Manoj with the project, Manoj decided to take the assistance of Mr. Bharani Prasad of Point Blank Ltd. (a jeans brand). The firm promised him a sponsorship of Rs. 25000 in materials. Manoj took the help of painters provided by Point Blank to paint the area by his design. Manoj designed the parking layout, based on the requirements, on his computer.
After missing a lot of classes in college and speaking to a lot of people to get permission Manoj feels that the effort was worth it and he feels lucky to have had the idea and the opportunity to execute it. He thanks LEAD for providing such a huge platform. His initiative is appreciated by local media of Bellary and it was published in a Kannada newspaper. Manoj won the Best Leader award in LEAD Mela 2011 because of this project. He is appreciated by hundreds of local people and hundreds of personalities who participated.

We told people about how they can be a part of LEAD and support us by sponsoring our projects or t-shirts or events. Project: Teaching Daily Wage Women Workers

Heena, a sixth semester student of PDIT (Proudha Devaraya Institute of technology), Hospet, attended the first session of LEAD orientation in September. After the session she wanted to do something and she visited the slum areas near Vivekanand Nagar behind the RTO office in Hospet. She came up with the idea to make literate the daily wage women workers from the slums so that they can at least read the boards of buses and make their signature. Heena formed a team of five members and started working on this. First of all she convinced her parents to allow her to go to the slum area. She visited the project area and convinced women about the importance of education in their lives and gave them a ray of hope in writing their signature instead of putting a thumbprint.

Initially Heena and her team started with 11 women to teach. When she started this work, some men were passing comments but the team didn’t look back and within one week there were 25 women attending the regular classes. Heena and her teammates worked on this after regular classes (after 5.30pm) and on Sundays. Within a period of one month, Heena had helped 24 women to successfully read and write. From the team 8 girls dropped out who were from the regular studies and they gained confidence back to study.

In November 2009 Heena has got “Best Committed Leader Award” for her committed work. Now the slum people have improved perspectives about women and education.

Savage saddle- Construction of 600m road

One of the most appreciated project recently is ''Savage Saddel" by Anup Bijapur from Hospet. The LEADer says "The road near station in Hospet was found with sludge and lots of savage deposited around. It needed an immediate attention and I along with another LEADer Sourabh had taken up an initiative and approached the Corporation for help. we didn’t get any support and ourselves cleared the mess partially. Our dedication towards the project influenced them and later they joined hands with us. A person named
M.C. Sindhur, who has his name in Limca book of records for being the first person to ensure the road in Hubli, contacted and congratulated me for my achievement in Hospet."

Challenges:

LEAD being new to the people it was difficult to convince the community and the corporation and mobilizing the local resources for the development.
People living there were illiterate and so were difficult to gain the community participation.
Initially we didn’t get any support from the Municipal corporation but later our dedication towards the development made them realize their responsibilities.
Struggled hard to save time to indulge into such activities as college timings were from 8:45am to 5:00pm.

Achievements:

Road which was in the worst condition is very better and benifitial to around 500+ people living in the community there.
Now it’s a road over which the govt. has spent lakhs.
Reduce the time of aprox 20 mins.
Reduction of distance by 4 km.
Appreciation from media, college and from other places• Best project award.
