LEAD Awards

On 21-11-09, the best performing students in LEAD were awarded for their outstanding performances. Thirteen LEADers from Hubli, Dharwad, Hospet and Sirsi were awarded in different categories. The guests of honor were Mr. Naveen Jha (Director, DCSE), Mr. Aravind Irkal, Dr. Basavaraj Anami (Principal, KLE IT), Mr. Raghu and Ms. Dulcie Madden, who made the event a grand success by their gracious presence. Below are some details about the Best LEADers.

Master LEADer Award– Bharat Kotbagi, BVB CET, Hubli

He has worked on 2 projects and now is being promoted as

Campus Ambassador.

• Implementation of scientific dustbin in Adhyapak Nagar, Hubli

• Raised funds for flood victims and also visited the affected places and distributed the materials.

New Idea– Pratik B.S, BVB CET, Hubli

Organized inter college short movie making competition where more than 8 colleges participated and made

movies based on different themes.

Best LEADer– Anusha Jagannath, SDM CET,

Dharwad

Worked on several activities such as:

• Training the slum women on health and hygiene

• Raised funds and donated hygiene packets to the women which included soaps, dettol, towel etc.

Best Entrepreneurial idea– Vidyashree, SDM CET, Dharwad

Her idea was entrepreneurial in nature. She:

• Collected waste news papers from households and made paper bags

• Sold them to few shops in Dharwad

• Hired 3 poor women to make paper bags and provided livelihood to them

Best LEADer– Pramod Shet, SDM CET, Dharwad

Planted more than 40 trees in several places of Hubli. The uniqueness of the project is:

• He involved the local people during the implementation of the project.

• Provided gates and fences to protect the planted trees.

Best Scalable Project– Santosh Hiremath, KLE IT, Hubli

Organized a camp to issue

voter ID cards to the college

students. More than 150

students above the age group of 18 were provided with the voter ID cards.

World Aids Day- An Initiative to help the HIV/ AIDS victims

LEAD, Deshpande Foundation celebrated World AIDS day in BVB College of Engineering by distributing red ribbon with AIDS symbol to everyone. The LEADers also collected funds from fellow students, professors, principal and other staff of the college.

The activity started at 7 AM and ended at 5 PM. At the end of the day te students were able to collect more than 10000 Rs which will soon be donated to AIDS victims.

Mr. Manish Jain, a first year student from BVB CET with his team members Dev Ashish, Asheesh, Abhishek, Preeti and Amruta initiated this activity with the help of LEAD event co-coordinator Mr.Radhakrishna Nayak and support from LEAD, Deshpande Foundation.

LEAD is an initiative by Deshpande Foundation which offers an opportunity to students to make change in their world by identifying and solving the unnoticed problems in the society. Deshpande Foundation gives financial and logistical support to the initiatives taken by students and thereby striving to create young LEADers for India.

Art Buzz- An Interschool Drawing Competition

Interschool drawing competition was organized by LEAD (Leaders Accelerating Development) of Deshpande Foundation, Hubli on 29-11-09 in the Deshpande Foundation premises. More than 350 students from 35 schools of Hubli participated in the competition. The competition was divided into 2 groups. Group A had students of 5^th – 7^th with the theme Nature and Environment and Group B was for 8^th- 10^th with the theme Environmental pollution.

Mithali oswal from Rotary Primary School, Shazia Killedar and Akshata Kattimani bagged the 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd prizes respectively in ‘A’ group.

Sheetal Patil from N.K Thakkar High Shool, Satish C.S and Suhasini Hangal bagged the 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd prizes respectively from Group ‘B’.

A trophy was presented to the schools of 1^st prize winners.

Team LEADer Dhananjay Habib from the IP Dept, BVB CET with his team mates Sumeet Ashtekar, Preeti Miskin, Rajni Habib and Pooja Sadalgi planned and executed the whole event.

Om Agencies, Baburao Bakeries and Shakti Cement supported the event through sponsorships.

B. Kotturshettar, HOD, IP Dept, BVB CET was the Chief Guest and Mr and MRS. S.P Gudi were the judges for the competition.

LEAD is an initiative by Deshpande Foundation which offers college students an opportunity to make change in their world. LEAD creates young LEADers who identify and solve the unnoticed problems of the society. Deshpande Foundation acts as a catalyst which gives financial and logistical support to the initiative taken by the students.

OASIS

Heavy rains lashed thousands of villages, made people homeless, people lost their families, everything around seemed inhuman, this was the time when student LEADers initiated the relief operation forming groups to gather all the necessary aid. When the common man realized how hard the floods had hit northern part of Karnataka, the relief material flooded in huge quantity. Realizing how connected the regional people felt about their fellow beings who suffered losses, they donated generously. From a layman to a big businessman in the city joined hands to rehabilitate the flood fatalities.OASIS…EK Umeed,

The charity cultural extravaganza was one such event organized headed by LEAD on 28^th of October 2009 to thank people of Hubli for their generosity. The show began with welcoming the crowd by the anchors Chaitra and Soumya. The guests of honor for the evening were, J K group of institutions’ chairman Shri Jagdish Kallyanshettar and the director of DCSE Mr. Naveen Jha. Various dance performances and skits were staged by the colleges of Hubli like KLE’s CBA, JGCC, PC JABIN, FATIMA, JAIN college, oxford BBA. Each skit had its own theme depicting various evils of the society and about how the system worked. In such situation it was also showcased that youth needed to take initiation in eradicating the social evils and LEAD program supported such initiatives taken. The dances and role plays were judged by the judges for the show, Mr Sunil the choreographer of “TALENTS” fame in Hubli..

Short Movie Making Competition

LEAD recently hosted one of the most exciting events, “The short movie making competition”. The competition was conducted in order to hunt the talent in acting, editing and script writing. The announcement of the event made on 25-09-09. Students from more than 10 colleges of Hubli-Dharwad region participated enthusiastically in the event with their creative videos. . One had to make a videothat could be of any topic with time period of equal to or less than 25 minutes. There were altogether 22 movie entries. Mr. Emil and Ms. Tripti were invited as judges for the competition. Mr. Emil Kuruvilla, presently working in Deshpande Foundation as Sandbox fellow-Media, before coming to Hubli Kuruvilla worked in Los Angeles in educational television. He created short commercials and documentaries that addressed social subject. The screening of the movies was done on 25-10-09 where the best 6 movies for the below mentioned categories were chosen by the jury. The final showcasing was done in DCSE Auditorium on 27-10-09. Mr.Naveen Jha, the director (DCSE, Hubli) was invited as the chief guest, where he gave away the prizes for these categories.

Project: Medical Garden and Usage

Project Implemention Date: 14-09-09 to 27-09-09

Project Description: "We the students of A.M.V came up with an idea to develop a medical garden within our campus. Our objective was to give the right information to the students about the medical usages of the plants and its uses, by mentioning its botanical name, its family and its chemical composition. To implement this project we used some unusable tin materials and painted the botanical name and its chemical compositions of the particular plant and its usages. We divided the whole garden into plots and renovated the whole garden and planted some medical plants. The project has a very good follow up by the students."

Gandhi Jayanti Celebration

^2nd of October is celebrated by the world as “World Nonviolence Day”, the same day which is known as “Gandhi Jayanti” in India. It is the day on which the great Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi was born. The day has its own importance because his contribution to Indians was significantly praiseworthy. He was “Bapu”(FATHER in Hindi) to all the citizens of India who were in the clutches of British. Truth and Ahimsa were his weapons of war.

LEADers from Deshpande Foundation celebrated the day by organizing a recreational event for the inmates of Sub jail, Hubli. Radhakrishna Nayak the alumni of JG College of Commerce coordinated the event with LEAD core team and the Campus Ambassadors from different colleges to make it a successful event. It took a week’s planning and hard work to prepare for the event for the day.

It was an off-beat experience for us to visit a jail and seeing its inmates. Tall iron doors and small cells were weary to look at. Only 17 of us were allowed to enter the jail for security reasons. Cell phones were also prohibited. Only cameras were let in with a condition to take pictures only of the event. The program manager of LEAD Ms. Megha Hegde was present with us at the time of event.

The event was inaugurated by the jailer Shri Moolimani who expressed his thought on life and achievements of Mahatma Gandhi. He focused on how the weapon of Satya and Ahimsa became the strongest force of nation to defeat the English dictators. Event began with invocation song by Reshma followed by the performance by the team of Mumtaz, Netravati and Reshma who presented some patriotic songs. Then it was the turn of the LEADers from IBMR who performed an excellent skit showing Ramayana with the characters from today’s world. The event worked as a great tool of entertainment to them. There were around 100 inmates including 10 women prisoners who enjoyed throughout the event. The most interesting part of the event was that the inmates of the sub jail participated actively when they were given a chance to express their talents. Amazingly some of them could sing really well.

Some refreshments were provided to the inmates at the end of the event. We are grateful to all the sub jail officials who gave us an opportunity to serve to the prisoners. We feel satisfied for we could entertain and interact with the inmates on the occasion.

COLORS

LEADer says" As a part of LEAD, Deshpande Foundation, we, the Oxford and IBMR College students had conducted Art Competition in Rotary Deaf and Dumb School on 30/09/09 and prize distribution was held on 02/10/09.

The main objective of conducting the art competition was to bring out the hidden talents in the students who didn't have the opportunity to explore their talents on any platform and to create competitive spirit among the handicapped students.

Many of the students participated and they were altogether 54 students. Among them some of the students were unable to grasp what exactly they are supposed to do in the event. The LEADers made few drawings on the board to make them understand that they are going to take part in the art competition.All the students with their own interest and great enthusiasm participated in the competition and had done their best. The children and staff members were given chocolates during the event. The way of communication between the teachers and the children was a very new experience for the LEADers. Though there was good convey of message among each other.

One hour was alloted to them to make their drawings. It was incredible to see the children a bit away from the normal strain pouring their imagination on the papers. It was tough for the judges to pick the best talent.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti ( 2nd October), the chairman of the school Dr. S.S. Hiremath was the guest of honour. He gave away great knowledge about the great leader Mahatma Gandhi. It worked as a good tool of motivation for the LEADers. The prize distribution was held on the same day. Best 3 drawings were selected from 7th, 5th and 2nd standerd students. Other 3 drawings were awarded as master pieces and all the students were given appreciation certificates.

The LEADer says " It was a great experience and our 1st project achieved a good success. We didn't know that we had that potential to make this event a successful one. We, the LEADers would like to thank Deshpande Foundation for giving us such an opportunity to do this event and encouraging our youth of India who can really be the great LEADers of India to come up with their talents.We thank you for all your support and guidance. The fellows of the team are Pooja chavan, Nandini Channashetti, Naina Jotuani, Manjunath Cholin, Sanjay Bedare and Chetan.

Shrishail says, "As a part of LEAD, Deshpande Foundation, we, the Oxford and IBMR College students, had conducted an Art Competition in the Rotary Deaf and Dumb School. 54 students participated in the event in which 3 best drawings were awarded by Dr. S.S. Hiremath on 2nd of October. The main objective of conducting the art competition was to create a competitive spirit and bring out the hidden talents among the handicapped students who didn't have the opportunity to explore their talents on any platform. Pooja Chavan, Nandini Channashetti, Naina Jotuani, Manjunath Cholin, Sanjay Bedare were the active members of the team. The event was very successful and was appreciated by the chairman of the Rotary D. & D. School."

Project Description: "Trees are the most valuable resources on earth. These are the lungs of our environment, but unfortunately people have failed to understand this. Trees are been cut for peoples' selfish reasons and for the development of the society. Development of society is necessary but on the other hand we also have to understand that for a society to have a better future, a better place to live, a better place to breathe, there must be sufficient amount of greenery around us. Our project was a small step towards this green goal and we have achieved it by doing plantation in the forest colony. The surroundings of the forest colony is fast developing and this place is visited by a large number of people. Our team decided to do the plantation in forest colony and we have successfully completed our project."

Project Description: The objective of this project was to plant trees in this locality. About 75 saplings were planted and fenced. An awareness was created in the neighborhood to take care of them.

LEAD '09

Students today have the responsiveness and are capable of bringing about change in the social order, but our system lacks proper mechanism to extract that potential in every individual. Only an outdoing person gets the identity and opportunity to lead and the individual can contribute to world significantly.
LEAD '09 is a dais for the college students to explore their leadership skills, not outsized but with a small beginning. As envisaged by the legend Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, the revolutionary change in social culture could be achieved through this very new opportunity which is a combination of social concept and student interaction. LEAD acts as the bridge that fills the gap between historical and new age India.

Lead '09 is coming up with more excitement, bigger and scalable projects with increasing number of students participating enthusiastically with a larger goal of making India crisis-free in their own way of student movement. "Short Movie Competition", "OASIS09" etc. are some of the events that exhibited the LEADership and creativity of LEADers.
